Former Boss of the Nigerian prison service dies after attack lastnight (UPDATED)

It was just learnt that Jarma Katagun, the former comptroller general of the Nigerian Prisons, died last night from gunshot wounds inflicted on him in an attack by members of the Boko Haram sect.

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen shot at Mr. Katagun yesterday in his hometown of Azare, Bauchi State, as the former prisons official left a mosque.
Wounded, he was taken to an undisclosed hospital for emergency treatment. A family source disclosed that Mr. Katagun died overnight of complications from his gunshot wounds. Two security guards of the retired prisons official also lost their lives in yesterday’s attack.

Mr. Katagun is one of two high-profile victims of attacks by the extremist Islamist group in the last 24 hours. The other casualty was Zannah Mallam Gana, the Borno State Commissioner for Justice, who was shot dead yesterday. Mr. Gana was shot dead in Bama, Borno State.

May their souls rest in peace.
